ANAHEIM, Calif. - For the second time in three days, the Anaheim Ducks went into the third period tied at home and ended up with only one point to show for it. This time, it was the determined Arizona Coyotes who took a shootout victory from the two-time Pacific Division champions.Rob Klinkhammer and Shane Doan scored 58 seconds apart early in the second period, Mike Smith made 37 saves and Mikkel Boedker got the deciding goal in the tiebreaker, leading the Coyotes to a 3-2 win on Friday night. It was the their third straight win — all by one-goal margins after beating Washington 6-5 and Toronto 3-2.When you come here and get a win, its huge, Doan said. Its a tough building to play in. We had to find a way to play our best. If we play our best, we have a chance. And tonight we were good for probably about 40 minutes.Ryan Getzlaf and Matt Beleskey scored for the Ducks and Frederik Andersen made 23 saves after missing two games with stiffness in his leg.Getzlaf returned to the lineup after missing Wednesdays 3-2 overtime loss to the New York Islanders because of the flu. But longtime linemate Corey Perry, who leads the league with 11 goals, sat out his second straight game with the same ailment. For me, personally, its different without him out there, Getzlaf said. Obviously, theres plays when hes usually there — and tonight he wasnt. So those are things Ive got to adjust to. We had a few opportunities to put those guys away and we werent able to do it.Getzlaf opened the scoring at 5:02 of the opening period, beating Smith to the stick side with a one-timer from the left circle while Sam Gagner was off for tripping Emerson Etem. Beleskey made it 2-0 at 8:49, converting a rebound after Smith robbed Jakob Silfverberg with his left leg at the right of the crease.Silfverberg is the only Ducks forward to have played in all 15 games without scoring a goal despite taking 34 shots on net. Last season, he had four in his first four games and 10 in 52 games altogether. When youre getting chances like he is, eventually theyre going to go in, coach Bruce Boudreau said.Coyotes coach Dave Tippett acknowledged that the victory might not have been possible without Smiths efforts. He was most competitive in a game when we needed big saves. And he gave us big saves, Tippett said. Thats a great sign. I think thats really good for our whole psyche of our team when he plays like that. With the first period winding down, Beleskey took a slap shot from the red line that caromed off the end boards and into the slot. Ryan Kesler swooped in and played the carom perfectly, but was robbed by Smith just before horn sounded. It turned out to be a pivotal moment, because it gave the Coyotes a chance to pull even by the 4:53 mark of the second period. Its quite a big difference going in 3-0 than 2-0, Boudreau said. I think the other turning point was when Smith misplayed the puck at the start of the second and we could have made it 3-0 then. But we didnt, and then they came down the ice and scored — and all of a sudden, they got life. So that was a big game-changer.We had so many Grade-A chances, and we have to score on those, Boudreau added. Thats what happens when youre a team thats basically averaging two goals a game for the last six games. Were squeezing the sticks too tight, and the ones that normally would go in arent.Klinkhammer was able to redirect Martin Hanzals 360-degree pass into the slot for his third goal of the season, and Doan beat Anderson to the glove side with a wrist shot from the left circle. At that point, Boudreau burned his timeout in an attempt to halt the Coyotes momentum. We should have done better throughout the whole game and played consistently, which is something we have to address right now, Getzlaf said. PETERSBURG, Fla.ARLINGTON, Va. -- Even if Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals have earned a reputation for quick exits, at least theyve been making the playoffs year after year. Thats not a given this time. And the team is well aware of it: Every time players set foot in the practice facility, they come face to face with a display showing where Washington stands. On Thursday, the Capitals had 70 points, good enough only for 11th place in the 16-team Eastern Conference. The top eight teams qualify for the post-season. "Weve got a board in our dressing room here that says the standings. You walk by it six, seven times a day," right wing Troy Brouwer said. "So theres no way to be immune to whats going on." Washington hasnt missed the playoffs since the 2006-07 season, although its never been past the second round in that span. At the moment, the fading Capitals have won only one of their last six games heading into Friday night against the visiting Vancouver Canucks, who are 10th in the West. "The desperate level," Brouwer said, "is getting up there." Washington has 15 games left in the regular season. Its not a particularly easy schedule, either, with 10 games against teams currently in playoff position, including a daunting March 18-22 road trip to Anaheim, Los Angeles and San Jose. "Obviously, were very concerned," coach Adam Oates said. "But the one good thing about hockey is tomorrows another game and you cant get too far ahead or dwell too much on it, because youve got to play tomorrow. Its a must win tomorrow." There have been various problems lately, including poor passing and puck possession, leading to turnovers and a lack of shots on goal. Also glaring: Ovechkins sudden lack of scoring. The three-time NHL MVP and team captain leads the league with 44 goals, but he has been held without a point in each of the last four games, matching his worst drought this season. So whats it going to take to get things turned in the right direction before its too late? "It can be one big hit," saiid Ovechkin, whos been known to dole those out.dddddddddddd "Or it can be one good play and everybody (wakes) up and everybody (plays) much better." In a bid to help the playoff push, general manager George McPhee added goalie Jaroslav Halak and left wing Dustin Penner in separate deals at the trade deadline this month, then finally signed 2010 first-round draft pick Evgeny Kuznetsov. But there hasnt been a payoff yet. Penner was thought to be destined for the top forward line, alongside Ovechkin and centre Nicklas Backstrom. But Oates said Thursday, "I dont think he matches well with them." Asked to elaborate, Oates replied: "Hes not the fastest guy in the world. Hes a puck-possession, battle-along-the-wall guy, and I think (Ovechkin and Backstrom) need a quicker guy." Halak, meanwhile, has made three consecutive starts over Braden Holtby. Oates wouldnt say who would be in net Friday. Holtby said all the right things Thursday, though -- about Halak "giving us a chance to win, whenever he plays"; about how "I want to learn from" Halak; about how theres no rivalry between the pair. Holtby also gave a frank assessment about what Washington needs to do now. "Everyone knows," Holtby said, "that we have to have at least 10 wins, probably, in these last 15 -- or more -- to have a chance." Notes: D Dmitry Orlov signed a $4 million, two-year contract extension. "Good for him," Ovechkin said, "and good for us." Orlov was suspended by the NHL for two games this month after launching into an opponent and drawing a major penalty that helped the Flyers rally for a 5-4 overtime victory. ... C Brooks Laich, who missed two of the last four games with a groin injury, saw a doctor and will be monitored day by day, according to Oates. Its possible Laich will play Friday. ... C Mikhail Grabovski skated before Thursdays practice as he deals with a left ankle injury. "Until he can practice with us, I think hes a ways away," Oates said.
